A Sleepy Winter
Samuel Green
"A Sleepy Winter" is a children’s book that I wrote and illustrated, inspired by the rich wildlife and seasonal beauty of the UK. The story introduces young readers to the concept of hibernation, exploring how animals prepare for winter. All the illustrations are hand-drawn using a combination of watercolour and coloured pencil, creating a soft, inviting feeling that complements the story’s tone. The warm, textured artwork invites readers into the woodland setting, making it a cozy and engaging read for children and families alike. At the heart of the tale are two woodland friends, Fox and Dormouse, who face an emotional challenge as the seasons shift. Autumn fades to winter and Dormouse must hibernate, leaving Fox to face the season alone. Fox struggles with the idea of being apart from his friend. Together they learn that even when apart, the warmth of true friendship can carry them through the coldest months. With its gentle narrative and comforting themes, the book offers children a thoughtful look into friendship, the cycles of nature and the importance of supporting one another through life’s transitions.
As an illustrator, I create warm, joyful images inspired by childhood moments in nature. Using traditional media, I craft a unique visual language to bring characters and scenes to life. My goal is to connect young audiences with nature, fostering a passion for wildlife. Rooted in kindness and care, my practice reflects a commitment to animal welfare and environmental protection. I see illustration as a way to share my love for the natural world, celebrating its beauty and leaving viewers with a lasting sense of wonder and connection.
