Guns of The West: Volume II
Jivan West
Resilience amongst changing landscapes in art and fashion is the focus of Guns of The West.
This issue focuses on tangible, sustainable practices and the identities of practitioners who go beyond the typically accepted ways of working. From Rachael Louise Bailey’s use of found wool to Lennard Zinn’s hand-shaped bolo ties, Guns of The West tells the story of those whose practices are self-defined and ever-adapting.
As Cowboys once attempted to survive the unforgiving frontier of the American West, these individuals and practices are now required to navigate through times of economic instability, environmental degradation, and harmful technologies. Throughout this magazine, symbols like the Cowboy, the Longhorn, and the open landscape of our world tie together the work of these artists and their place within the spirit of the West, despite most of them practicing in London.
This magazine is a testament to the challenges of our present moment and how embracing tradition, sustainability, and one's own identity can help us persevere. Just as the Longhorn grew its massive horns to increase its chance of survival in the American West’s arid climate, the practices documented are constantly adapting to our current moment, to be remembered for their unique visual and cultural impact.
Documenting the relationship between human expression and the natural world is central to Jivan West’s practice. His ongoing project When The Wind Blows (2020–) portrays wildfire destruction and regrowth in Boulder, Colorado, reflecting on climate crises and personal loss in the American West. In 2023, West launched Guns of The West, a self-published magazine focused on resilience in art and fashion. The publication highlights practitioners redefining sustainability through self-determined methods. Volume II, released in June 2025 with 50 hand-stitched copies, explores how symbols of the West manifest in contemporary art and fashion practices rooted in London.
