Amalgamation
Megan Turner
Art serves as an extension of the body, and this connection is what draws me to painting. As an abstract painter, I find inspiration in sound, perspective, scale, and immersion. My practice revolves around my passion for gestural mark-making and abstract expressionism, which provide me with outlets for expression. By allowing music to aid my creative process, I immerse myself in the act of creation, enabling me to communicate my intentions to viewers.
I also focus on the concept of freedom by examining the processes involved in painting and the connections between movement, abstract expressionism, music, and emotion. I delve into the ritualistic nature of painting, incorporating meditative movements while considering compositional and material layering. Additionally, I aim to break away from the traditional aspects of the canvas.
Amalgamation is a piece that heavily features the theme of materiality. The use of blinds, bedsheets, and yarn allows for the piece to break away from the traditional painting form. The piece acts as a sculptural painting that can be viewed from any angle, paired with it's height. This is a particuarly important feature for me, as the piece holds a vibrant power in the space.
Megan Turner is a fine artist from the Isle of Wight, now based in London. Specialising in mixed-media abstract painting, she considers themes of scale, materiality, and process. Understanding the intuitive movements that come with painting on large spaces such as walls, bedsheets, and blinds is imperative to her process, letting the materials play an extra role by themselves.
Her work 'Amalgamation' was recently exhibitied at Ambika P3 in the Fine Art Mixed Media degree show.
