Aso Ikele (The Robe)
Paris Otuyelu
This collection showcases a diverse array of prints characterised by vibrant primary colours. The colour palette and designs draw from the shapes in the 'Agbada Robe' worn by King Oba Adémuwagún Adésidà in 1940, carvings from various Nigerian tribal houses as well has historical Nigerian sculptures. The recurring face motif adorned King Oba's 'Agbada, symbolising the eight Nigerian Kings who preceded him. Techniques such as hand painting, silkscreen, sublimation printing, and hand embroidery were used to bring the prints to life. The collection draws from both historical Nigerian and Western attire, particularly highlighting the contrasts between Nigerian and Western robes of the past. Each ensemble merges elements of traditional Nigerian clothing with classic Western garments such as the smoking jacket, men's button-up nightshirt, and women's nightdress.
I am Paris Otuyelu, a Fashion Designer based in London. My work is influenced by historical Nigerian and Western Fashion. This cultural and stylistic synthesis serves as tribute to my Nigerian Heritage while simultaneously forging contemporary expressions of identity through Modern Fashion, representing both continuity and reverence for ancestry. Employing large, bold silhouettes with my eye-catching prints, along with incorporating simpler pieces such as the nightshirt adds a touch of playfulness to daily attire while also resulting in stylish upscale garments.
