What makes a space a home, and what remains after a body has moved through it? Clear is a mixed-media interactive installation concerned with traces of presence, the invisible marks a life leaves behind.
The work takes the form of two skeletal rooms. One is sealed with sheer fabric, visible only from the outside or from above. The other is open, inviting the viewer to enter, touch, and interact. A monochrome palette runs across the installation, positioning it as clinical documentation, paper-like and evidential. Clay objects sit on plinths, one untouched, the other handled: fingerprints, dust, and pressure marks become part of the object, which in turn deposits an invisible tacky film onto the viewer's hands, completing an exchange of residue. Unlike the surfaces, structures, and objects of domestic life, touched consistently and routinely by the same hands, here the marks are left by strangers.
Text pieces, printed on acetate and fixed to the wall, name sounds heard within the home, sounds encountered frequently but experienced differently by each person who hears them. This prompts the viewer to imagine rather than hear them, drawing their own domestic experience into the work as material.
As a home documents its occupants, and its occupants reciprocate, Clear documents the trace of everyone who passes through.

Sam Dicker is an artist and curator whose practice concerns the physical space of home: its layout, atmosphere, and the memory and traces left unnoticed. She is interested in how domestic environments accumulate presence, and in making that accumulation visible.
Working across installation and sculpture, she lets material and intuition lead. Over time she has moved away from found objects and towards constructing her own forms. She designs environments to be experienced physically, where the viewer does not just observe but participates, leaving their own trace behind.
