Cross?
Gaurav Gurung
Cross?” Is an expanded illustration that depicts rings that have crosses on them, with the rings being illustrated through various media such as video, etching, and photography. The artwork shows multiple vortexes made with mixed media, with there being different illustrations in the middle of the different vortexes; all the vortexes interact together to create the larger artwork. The process to make the vortexes were an instinctive process, being made from scratch. The artwork is interesting as it has an experimental style with the artwork being made on layers of paper and comes off the frames of the paper. The artist’s work explores his Nepalese cultural heritage and his personal perspective, within Nepalese society symbols can change meaning because of the symbolisms being taken out of their contexts. The artwork responds to this sentiment with the use of the cross, using the symbol to take it out of its religious context and create a new meaning for the symbol. The artwork experiments the new meaning for the symbol with video and the contrasting use of physical materials to show the new meaning through the digital world along with the real world
Gaurav Gurung is currently finishing the Foundation year in Art & Design specialising in Fine Art Mixed Media at the University of Westminster. He works with various mediums but specialises in painting and illustration. Within his practice, he touches on themes of symbolisms and the meaning attached to idioms. This is based off his Nepalese cultural heritage and how symbols can lose their meaning as they are removed from their respective contexts within Nepalese society, giving newfound meaning entirely. In the future Gaurav plans to move into the Fine Art Mixed Media BA course and plans to do more exhibitions.
