Double Life
Yirui Wang
Yirui Wang's “Double Life” collection combines elements of the Miao ethnic group with modern fashion silhouettes, a collection that is interested in the culture and characteristics of traditional Chinese ethnic groups. Inspired by the dress and life of China's ethnic Miao minority, it speaks to the clothing needs of the modern Miao girl. The collection experimented with pattern making to realise reversible garments (formed by flipping the neckline and hem), a modern style for everyday casual and a traditional Chinese Miao style. These two styles were fused into one garment through pattern making, and by simply reversing the hem and neckline, two very different garments were realised. The collection utilises two reversible fabrics, representing the two sides of life. The designer hopes to fuse Miao clothing with modern clothing and use this clothing to meet the clothing needs of the Miao or those interested in Miao culture in modern society (i.e., the need to transform the same garment for everyday life and special occasions).
