Gurbet
Selin Goksu
Gurbet is a Turkish term that describes a deep longing for one's homeland. This collection explores my identity, family and cultural heritage. As a daughter of an immigrant family, I experience a constant push and pull between cultures, prompting me to question what “home” truly means.
Drawing inspiration from family photographs, I reinterpret the silhouettes and shapes of garments worn by relatives alongside traditional Turkish clothes. Turkish Kilims also inform the collection, mainly their symbolic motifs, such as the elibende, which represents femininity and motherhood. These symbols are translated into vibrant embroidery and printed artworks. In addition, motifs inspired by my mother's hand-crocheted lace are incorporated into embroidery and print samples, creating a connection across generations.
The distorted look of the prints and loose strands of embroidery reflect the tension between belonging and displacement, capturing both the push and pull of cultural identity and the enduring sense of longing embodied by Gurbet.
My name is Selin Goksu, and I am a London-based fashion designer specialising in womenswear, with a particular focus on embroidery and print. I recently completed my placement year, gaining industry experience through internships at S.S. Daley and Erdem. My work explores the relationship between fashion and culture, drawing inspiration from Middle Eastern history, mythology and storytelling. Through vibrant colour palettes, bold silhouettes and creative approaches to draping and pattern cutting, I create designs that celebrate cultural narratives and craftsmanship.
