Hinabi By Hand

Shaniah Yu

Hinabi by Hand is a hand-embroidered textile that brings together images of Philippine wildlife and native flora, celebrating the richness and diversity of the country's ecosystems. Each stitch represents time, care, and attention, becoming a small act of appreciation for the species depicted. Built slowly, thread by thread, the work reflects on the beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness of these forms of life, while highlighting the importance of preserving the natural world they inhabit.

Shaniah Yu is a multidisciplinary artist from the Philippines whose practice explores cultural heritage, memory, and identity through textiles, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Drawing inspiration from her Filipino-Chinese roots, family traditions, and the natural richness of the Philippines, her work investigates how cultural knowledge is carried, transformed, and reinterpreted across generations. Through colour, pattern, texture, and material experimentation, she creates work that reflects an ongoing dialogue between past and present. Her practice is guided by curiosity, craft, and a commitment to exploring how inherited traditions can find new forms of expression through contemporary making.
