It doesnt Fall far from the tree
Jocelyn andra
This collection explores my identity, memory, and craftsmanship through the materials that shaped my childhood. Inspired by my grandparents in Indonesia, the project transforms the remaining velvet leaves from my late grandfather’s former business into contemporary garments, allowing materials that once seemed forgotten to carry a new life and purpose.
Growing up surrounded by these velvet leaves, I never imagined they would one day become part of my design practice. Throughout the collection, I combine embroidery, textile experimentation, print development, and tailoring to reinterpret these materials while drawing inspiration from Indonesian craftsmanship and the silhouettes that I grew up seeing. Rather than recreating tradition, I wanted to translate its essence into a contemporary context.
My work is driven by storytelling. I believe clothing can hold memories, preserve the people behind them, and encourage us to care more deeply about the garments we wear. Every detail is considered as a way of honouring the journey of the material while creating something that feels both familiar and unexpected.
With It Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree, I hope people become curious about the stories hidden within each garment and begin to see fashion as more than something we consume. For me, fashion is an opportunity to preserve memories, celebrate craftsmanship, and create pieces that carry meaning from one generation to the next.
