Singularity
Carl Justin Agustin
‘Singularity’ is a carefully curated collection that heavily blends personality, creativity and nourishment into one. The collection presents itself as childlike and imaginative as there are multiple iterations of the same objects. It is silk-screen printing that relies on the three colours overlapping. This type of technique is quite repetitive which makes the images much more distorted which allows people to interpret however they please. It is resembling the Pop Art Movement as they had artists, like Andy Warhol to utilise vibrant colours to convey heavier subject matters. The objects in ‘Singularity’ are reminiscent of his daily life throughout and the relationship between the objects that is being presented. There are multiple brands and logos which helps make the piece more memorable and helps reinforce this idea of playfulness. Furthermore, it adds a sense of relatability, by blending them together. These pieces further demonstrates how the objects are categorised into three main sections, as the ones in blue create a sense of identity, whilst the ones coloured in yellow and pink showcase happiness (through the snacks and food wrappers) and innovation (through the art materials) respectively.
Moreover, the pieces adds an element of curiosity and intrigue due to the amount of subtle details it has. ‘Singularity’ provides a sense of nostalgia as it combines both past and present selves, whilst illustrating that the journey from childhood can be unique and messy.
Carl Justin Agustin is currently completing a Foundation in Art and Design specialising in Animation for next year at the University of Westminster. Agustin works with more materials that are more free-flowing and expressive, such as graphite or ink. However, he has decided to focus on silk-screen printing as his main material because of the practicality and creativity that the technique provides him. He is planning on expanding his use of materials and seeing how he can manipulate them to make unconventional products. He wants to do animation for his first year to push his limits on storytelling through art.
