Stories From The Sea
Georgia Clarke
Set in my hometown on the Dorset Coast, this collection depicts a state of in between; a surreal relationship between sea and garment, from the perspective of a conscious entity experiencing an incoherent perception of reality.
Drawing silhouettes from Georgian era dress, each look illustrates a fragmentary narrative from the aforementioned scene.
Look 1 exhibits a tailcoat, salvaged from a bygone shipwreck. Emerging transformed by the ocean, the lining is scarred with an impression of the storm that swallowed it. With a disorientated glance- an apparition of Mary Anning quickly dissipates, leaving only a glimpse of her cape fading into the shore, forming Look 2. Look 3 represents the crashing waves in a tempest. At days end, reminiscent observations from roaming the bay have coalesced into singular darkness, presenting Look 4.
In the production of this collection, I have developed textiles to communicate these moments. Every look utilises materials which have been donated, or that are from previous projects, along with fabrics inherited from my late Great-Grandmother.
The project title is in homage to Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea- an album by PJ Harvey, who is a prominent inspiration to me and my work.
I take pleasure in creating collections that are rich in both storytelling and historical references, with evocative yet balanced outcomes. My fashion design practice specialises in womenswear and contour (lingerie), imbued with a passion in textile development.
